These mock retro album covers were created as part of the opening title and credit sequence for House Party, a TV series on The Comedy Network about a house party gone terribly awry. The production designer wanted the opening sequence of the series to feature partygoers thumbing through record albums in the parents’ rec room. What they find are the most tasteless selection of LP’s — which also happen to double as the title cards for cast and crew. I researched the worst record album covers and did my best to, well, best them. Click here to see all of the resulting covers.

Alison Gillmor, CBC News:“House Party’s opening credits unfold on cheesy old album covers. This simple visual device encapsulates the salvage mentality that animates not only Winnipeg’s legendary garage sales, but also much if its art. Many Winnipeg artists seem to have a Value Village aesthetic, finding meaning and beauty in the old, the discarded and the undervalued. Cult filmmaker Guy Maddin pines for archaic movie styles and for a Winnipeg that has ceased to exist (and perhaps never did); multimedia artist Daniel Barrow is inspired by lost 1980s public-access television shows; while the film collective L’Atelier National du Manitoba takes a neo-ironic look at a town haunted by the ghost of a dead NHL hockey team.”
Here is a modified version of the House Party title sequence used in the commercial for House Party on the Comedy Network. (The Comedy network replaced the text on the covers in this video to re-purpose them for their commercial)
